PUNE : A catastrophic forest fire recently ravaged the jungles and hills of Pingori in Purandar Tehsil, destroying more than 1,500 acres of vital forest land. This massive blaze occurred in a vast area adjacent to the iconic Jejuri Khandoba Temple and is being reported as the largest fire incident the region has ever seen.

Beyond the environmental destruction, this natural disaster has dealt a severe financial blow to the local farming community. As the fire spread, it consumed numerous stacks of fodder, reducing lakhs of rupees worth of livestock feed to ashes. Distraught villagers expressed deep concern that if such incidents continue to occur, their primary means of livelihood will be completely destroyed. Although the Forest Department initiated firefighting operations following alerts from the Pingori Police Patil and the Sarpanch, significant damage to the local biodiversity had already taken place.

Devastating Impact on Farmers

Threat to Wildlife and Livestock

According to local residents, the forest fire has become a deadly threat not only to the vegetation but also to wildlife and domestic animals. Since many villagers regularly take their cattle into these forests for grazing, there is a growing fear of a major tragedy or loss of life in the future. The intensity of the fire has created a sense of terror among the people who depend on these hills for their daily needs.

Demand for Strict Action

The local community has urged the administration to take decisive action against the situation. They have specifically demanded a strict vigil to identify and penalize miscreants who intentionally set fire to the forests. Villagers emphasized that such deliberate acts of mischief are causing irreversible damage to the environment and must be prevented at all costs to ensure the safety of the region.
