Protocol vs. Caste: The Seating Dispute Between Kulkarni and Pawar

A sharp political drama unfolded between BJP MP Medha Kulkarni and BJP MLA Abhimanyu Pawar over front-row seating protocol at an event in Pune, held in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Following the altercation, Kulkarni launched a fierce verbal attack against Pawar, accusing him of high-handedness and injecting caste politics into a public forum, despite previously seeking her help to secure community votes during his own election.

Dispute Over Front-Row Seating at Student Felicitation Event

The discord erupted during a high-profile felicitation ceremony organized in Pune to honor successful UPSC and MPSC students alongside their parents. According to Kulkarni, a dispute arose over the seating arrangement when she noticed vacant chairs in the front row. She asserted that as a Member of Parliament, protocol dictated she occupy one of those seats. However, Pawar, the MLA from the Ausa constituency, allegedly rushed to claim the space and told her that since the event was organized for the Maratha community, her sitting in the front row could trigger a controversy. Kulkarni strongly countered this stance, stating that official government protocol governs seating arrangements at such events, not an individual’s caste.

Campaigning for Pawar’s Election Demanded Brahmin Community Votes

Expressing her deep disappointment, Kulkarni recalled how Pawar had repeatedly phoned and pleaded for her assistance during his election campaign. She noted that he had requested her to address a gathering of the Brahmin community to appeal for their political backing. Despite dealing with poor health at the time, she traveled to campaign for him and urged the community to vote en masse, which they ultimately did. She questioned why caste was being weaponized against her now, emphasizing that leaders should focus on unity rather than causing division over regional identities.

Allegations of Being Blocked from Meeting Devendra Fadnavis

Kulkarni further alleged that Pawar actively blocked her from meeting Devendra Fadnavis in the VIP lounge prior to the main event. She explained that she had accompanied a delegation of Maratha youth who were fighting for justice regarding a serious issue and wished to present their grievances to the Deputy Chief Minister. However, Pawar allegedly intervened and instructed the police on duty to bar her and the delegation from entering. Kulkarni angrily questioned whether Pawar had now become the self-appointed gatekeeper to decide who Fadnavis is permitted to meet.

Sidelined in Local Pune Politics and Infrastructure Events

While clarifying that the seating arrangement itself was secondary to the disrespect shown, Kulkarni condemned Pawar’s demeanor, stating that he behaves with an unearned sense of superiority and that she intends to raise this matter directly with her party bosses. Furthermore, she expressed broader discontent regarding her systemic exclusion from local governance in Pune. She revealed that she is routinely sidelined and denied official invitations to major state-led programs, including the Pune Metro and PMRDA bridge inaugurations, forcing her to attend public events merely as a spectator after reading about them in the daily newspapers.
