Torrential flooding across Assam has claimed at least 75 lives, with Sivasagar suffering the latest blow after seven additional fatalities were reported. The ongoing crisis has disrupted daily life across seven key districts, leaving 332,639 residents across 622 villages struggling to cope. Agriculture has taken a devastating hit, with over 45,000 hectares of farmland underwater. While major rivers remain below their historical peak levels, the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh poses an ongoing threat as it flows above danger levels.

State Vows Rebuilding Support with Direct Cash and Academic Grants

Pledging to support citizens through the recovery phase, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced streamlined procedures and enhanced financial assistance. Families of the deceased will now receive a combined ₹9 lakh in compensation—combining ₹4 lakh in state ex-gratia (with the post-mortem mandate removed) and ₹5 lakh from the CM Relief Fund. Over 100,000 deeply impacted families will receive an immediate ₹15,000 cash grant for essential supplies, alongside a special ₹2,500 Orunodoi welfare payment starting August 1. Recognizing the disruption to education, the government is also providing book grants up to ₹5,000 for students, free uniforms, textbooks, and hassle-free replacement of lost school board certificates.
