Rising Leopard Sightings Cause Panic Among Local Residents

PUNE : A pet dog narrowly escaped a deadly leopard attack in Ganesh Nagar, located within the limits of Khamgaon village near Yavat, thanks to a protective iron-spiked collar around its neck. The incident occurred two nights ago when the dog was sitting in the front yard of its owner, Rajendra Nagwade. A leopard suddenly pounced on the dog and tried to bite into its neck. However, the sturdy spiked collar prevented the predator from getting a firm grip. As the dog barked loudly, Nagwade woke up and rushed outside, catching a glimpse of the leopard fleeing into nearby fields under the flash of his torchlight. The dog survived the ordeal with only minor injuries.

The attack has sparked widespread panic among residents in the area. Khamgaon’s extensive sugarcane fields and its proximity to the Mula-Mutha River provide ideal cover for leopards, leading to frequent sightings and repeated attacks on domestic and farm animals. Distressed villagers have urged the forest department to step up night patrols and capture the roaming big cat. In response, forest officials have advised locals to avoid venturing out alone at night, keep livestock safely sheltered, and report any sightings immediately. This incident has highlighted the effectiveness of spiked collars in safeguarding domestic animals from wild predator attacks when proper precautions are taken.
